Optical logic circuit

Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an exclusive OR signal and an AND signal with simple constitution by mixing input optical signals and distributing then at a specific intensity ratio, and using two optical bistable semiconductor lasers. CONSTITUTION: An optical mixing and distributing means mixes and distributes the 1st and 2nd input optical signals at the specific intensity ratio and they are inputted to a 1st optical bistable semiconductor laser with 1st input light intensity and a 2nd optical bistable semiconductor laser 38 with 2nd input light intensity. In this case, the 1st optical bistable semiconductor laser 34 performs exclusive OR(EXOR) operation, but the intensity of the optical signal inputted to the 2nd optical bistable semiconductor laser 38 is not attenuated, so AND operation is performed. Therefore, the optical output signal of the 1st optical bistable semiconductor laser 34 is used as a sum output and the optical output signal of the 2nd optical bistable semiconductor laser 34 is used as a carry output to enable this optical logic circuit to function as a half-adder. Consequently, the exclusive OR signal and AND signal are obtained with the simple constitution without using any optical demultiplexer. COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
